King Harvey Records
In 2010, Neil Carlill and Jamal River (a.k.a. King Toad) started collaborating on songs for a project called King Harvey: “King” for King Toad and “Harvey” for Harvey Mapcase. But in July of 2013 Jamal took his own life, leaving behind many songs and videos for the project; all will be released at some point in the future. His passing also left an awful, lingering sadness.
The Harvey Mapcase album Dot Kill Dot needed a basecamp, independent from remote business parlance and all that lively outsourcing implies. So our imprint, our label, our new home will be King Harvey Records, in loving memory of Jamal—the dear friend and brilliant man behind King Toad, Neil’s favorite recording artist.
The label’s logo is the wonderful creation of Shawn Martin, the Portland-based artist and designer who did the Dot Kill Dot packaging, and took many of the photos contained therein. The image was inspired by a work from British sculptor Austin J. Orwin, and is based on one of the iconic “lilac” photographs of Neil and Jamal, from the spring of 2011.
